Throughout the year 2000, NPR presented the stories behind 100 of the most important American musical works of the 20th century. A large group of NPR staffers came up with a long list of nominations that was then voted on by NPR listeners and a panel of 18 musicians put together by NPR. The preliminary list that this group came up with contained 300 works, which was then whittled down to the 100 works that were presented in the NPR series. The preliminary list can be viewed at NPR's website, www.npr.org.
